Banking Baby’s Cord Blood

Imagine a child ten years of age needing a bone marrow transplant… this is a hard time for the whole family. Imagine that same child’s parents had banked his or her cord blood when he was born so when they find out that he needs the transplant they do not have to look any further than the blood bank where the cord blood is stored.
Increasingly people are becoming aware that by banking their childs cord blood through scientific advances the cord blood might save their child’s life in the future. The main blood cells in a persons body are the stem cells, which are found in umbilical cord blood. Stem cells are required for human bodies blood cell requirements.
Many times people need a bone marrow transplant because of stem cell problems. A great source of stem cells that are high quality blood cells are found in cord blood. It is easy to retrieve the blood and completely harmless since the baby no longer uses the cord after he or she is born. If a family has a history of stem cell problems that might be hereditary, it is very beneficial for them to store the baby’s cord blood at birth. This way if the child develops blood problems later in life he or she does not have to find a matching donor. A child who develops a deadly disease, such as autoimmune diseases or cancers will benefit highly from his or her own cord blood.
The cord blood can also help a child with hemophilia, a coagulation disorder, where the childs blood does not clot. Science is advancing in such a way that in the years to come there may be more ways that cord blood can be beneficial. Any parent whose child has a blood disease that can be cured by the cord blood that was donated at birth will be glad that he or she banked the cord blood.
