Tinnitus is a broad term covering the affliction of hearing noise in the ear when there is an absence of other sounds.  The ringing ears (or other sounds such as a whoosh or flapping) may be a symptom of an underlying cause.  There are many such causes and tinnitus may be hard to diagnose.

Pregnant women are members of the population so they are going to be subject to general medical conditions like everyone else.  However, there is one difference between them and other members of the population and that is they are pregnant. This does present an increased prevalence of ear ringing,   

There is usually a simple explanation for the increased prevalence of ringing ears or tinnitus during pregnancy.  Fortunately, it is usually a temporary condition.  Women during pregnancy will have an increased blood flow.  They will also have a slight increased blood volume. This is common and their circulatory system is working a little harder than a person who is not pregnant.

One of the causes of tinnitus in the inner ear is hearing its own blood flow.  A non pregnant person with elevated or high blood pressure may experience the same sound.  Elevated blood pressure is one of the major causes of tinnitus.  One hears his own blood running through the arteries and veins in the neck and head.  Many times if the affected person listens closely, they will actually hear a whooshing sound rather than a ringing sound. 

Most often,  this “ringing in the ears” condition for pregnant women is nothing to be too concerned about.  The tinnitus will probably stop after the pregnancy.  However, tinnitus again is just a symptom of an underlying cause. There are many more causes that could present a problem for a pregnant woman.  

If a pregnant woman is on medication during pregnancy this could contribute to tinnitus.  Many prescription drugs have unintended side effects.  Current research has identified 260 prescription drugs for which one of the side effects is tinnitus.  Tinnitus is very hard to diagnose properly because there are so many factors to take into account.

Diagnosing the cause of tinnitus is more difficult during pregnancy. One should first educate oneself on common causes of ringing ears. Although an increased occurrence of tinnitus is relatively normal during pregnancy, it could be a sign of another underlying problem. Pregnant woman should consult their medical professional.  Be prepared to describe the symptoms and sounds in your ears as accurately as you can. This will help the physician determine the cause.

Most of the time, the ringing in the ears of pregnant woman is not a concern.  It can even be classified as a normal symptom of their pregnancy.  But your physician should be made aware of what you are experiencing.
