It used to be that if you had high cholesterol, you worked to bring it down and that was the end of it.   Many  people wish it still worked that way, but  that’s not the best thing to wish  .  Research progress has   given a lot of knowledge we didn’t have before.  If the objective was to keep it nice and easy, yes, new complexities would be a problem.  However, the objective of health care is to save life, and  because of that  the truth is best even if it is rather complex.  So, if you’re going to preserve your cholesterol underneath control, you want to know about the variety of sorts of cholesterol.

The first kind of cholesterol you really need to watch is low density lipoprotein cholesterol.   LDL cholesterol  is known as the bad variety because it’s the one that  builds up  plaques in your bloodstream. Cholesterol can’t dissolve in blood on its own, it has to be carried by a protein basket or it will really mess up circulation.  Low density lipoprotein baskets are pretty big, which means that only a few of them can fit into a given area.  That’s why they’re called “low density”.  That being said  , you don’t desire to get rid of all LDL cholesterol simply because it’s additionally applied for to fix or restore bodily tissue

The second kind of cholesterol that you’ll see come up on a cholesterol test is high density lipoprotein.  The protein basket that  holds this kind of cholesterol  is very small, which means that more of them can fit into the same space.  That’s where the “high density” designation comes from . HDL cholesterol is usually considered good because it’s going to liver to be cycled out of the system.  Too much HDL cholesterol is still bad because it means you had way too much in your system to begin with.  Put another way , you can only lose a hundred pounds if you were severely chubby to begin with.

The  Last kind of cholesterol you need to watch for  is called very low density lipoprotein, which is also known as triglycerides.  This classification covers all the other kinds of fat you’ve got rushing around in your bloodstream. VLDL and triglycerides might be the worst of all because it might still get synthesized into regular cholesterol. If you’ve got high levels of triglycerides it usually means that you’ve got too much fat floating around in your body, which isn’t usually good for anything  unless you’re doing an inordinate amount of work or exercise . Considering how sedentary modern life is, the probabilities aren’t good for anyone wanting that form of fat in their system.

All the  various classifications  of cholesterol add up to your total blood lipids level, which is also an important number to watch . However, as you can see , some kinds of cholesterol are better than others. Cholesterol as a whole is necessary to human life,  just not in excessive amounts .  As in so much concerning health,  there are no absolutes  . Acquire control of your wellness and get your cholesterol levels wherever they should be. Your heart should thank you for it.

For quite awhile there has been a argument that involves better health for women when  consuming dark chocolate. Various studies that have taken place with this somewhat less popular and more bitter type of chocolate have made people sit up and start to listen.

Throughout the history of chocolate there have been many who have ranted and raved about the benefits of consuming chocolate.  This has constantly and consistently been the case for hundreds of years, with dark chocolate considered the best.

The question has been asked many times, what is it about dark chocolate that provides these health benefits and why does milk chocolate not value the very same benefits nor the same respect with regards to this topic.

Milk chocolate contains milk or milk products and dark chocolate does not which is the main difference between the two. Milk chocolate is loaded with mainly fats and less amounts of the active element that is widely promoted in dark chocolate. On the other hand, dark chocolate contains a larger quantity of cocoa than a milk chocolate bar does and therefore, will have more flavonoids in it. It is these flavonoids that have been determined to be the beneficial part of the dark chocolate bar.  You might be asking yourself what are flavonoids?

Flavonoids have an active ingredient that is referred to as epicatechin and it is this particular ingredient that is particularly beneficial for the heart.  It has been proven that it will decrease the ability of cholesterol to from gathering inside many blood vessels. This in turn reduces blood clots from forming within the free flowing blood and therefore blood clots are less likely to form. It is those very same blood clots that harbor and creates the inability of blood to make its way to the heart and subsequently causing a heart attack.

However, more is not necessarily better in this case and by simply eating more dark chocolate does not mean that one is obtaining more of these flavonoids. Therefore, the upper limit suggested day by day intake of dark chocolate to have and or benefit from these health assurances is 1.4 oz. As with most things, more will most likely have reverse effects considering that it is laced with huge calories and full of sugar.

By simply eating dark chocolate you will not guarantee that you will not have health issues. You must also eat healthy, exercise daily and incorporate a good goal setting strategy, for this to have any benefits at all.

The fact that chocolate is a plant, this seems to be a good start on the quantity of fruits and vegetablesthat should be eaten on an everyday basis.

Yes the health benefits of dark chocolate have been docmented quite well when other measures are combined to improve your health, and can have some aid in the benefits of a healthy heart .

Being a lover of chocolate myself, this is great news.

Facts and Fallacies – Nutrition – The Cholesterol Debate

May 23, 2011 by author · Leave a Comment

A panel of leading medical experts has questioned the contention that cholesterol is a major cause of heart disease and that a blanket ban on the eating of meat, dairy products and eggs is unwarranted.   This panel, which included the pioneering heart surgeon, Dr Michael de Bakey, emphasized that cholesterol is only one of several risk factors contributing to heart disease.  They consider that the role of cholesterol in heart disease has been exaggerated and this has caused unnecessary alarm among the public.

They feel that the public should know that a review of current research reveals that cholesterol is the weakest of all the significant risk factors.   In a similar vein, the American Council on Science and Health issued a report stating that the public is being misled about cholesterol.  Its president, Dr Elizabeth Whelan, who is also a member of the panel examining the issue of cardiac disease, said that “there is no need to alarm the entire population about cholesterol”.

Dr de Bakey added that, even although large intake of dietary cholesterol can certainly elevate  the level of blood cholesterol,  “nobody knows the specific, precise agent that causes heart disease”.  He warned that “cholesterol tests are notoriously inaccurate” and heart disease can occur in numerous individuals who exhibit none of the classic risk factors.

The panel stressed that a more balanced view of the connection between diet and cardiac disease had to be presented, especially as the role of cholesterol in the chain of events is more complex than is generally appreciated.  Cholesterol is a component of all body cells and is manufactured by the liver, so that even if no cholesterol-rich foods are ingested, the body still has the ability to create endogenous cholesterol.  High blood cholesterol levels are more strongly associated with genetic factors than any other risk factors currently identified.  Foods containing saturated fats are rich in cholesterol and do elevate blood cholesterol, but the mechanism whereby cholesterol deposits itself on artery walls is not yet known.

The panel said that cessation of smoking, lowering of blood pressure and reduction of total calories via the eating of a nutritionally balanced diet with a variety of foods are the most effective ways of reducing the risk of heart disease.   They criticised the extreme focus placed on cholesterol, since this standpoint had diminished public awareness of smoking and high blood pressure as major risk factors.

They also considered the benefits of cholesterol-lowering drugs to be overstated and questioned the wisdom of lowering blood cholesterol in women because pre-menopausal women are less likely to have heart attacks than men.  Another researcher, Dr J M Price, in his book Coronaries, Cholesterol, Chlorine has presented evidence supporting the view that chlorine in drinking water may be a major factor associated with the formation of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which results in heart attacks.
