While some women can go through pregnancy without feeling depressed, a lot of women go through such mental state. About 10 or 20% of women go through depression. Depression during pregnancy is said to be due to the hormonal imbalances that change the brain chemistry.

However, there are still many other things that can cause depression during pregnancy. Among these things include stressful situations, abuse, trauma, fertility treatments, pregnancy complications, unplanned pregnancy, and financial issues.

Some women get depressed over the fact that their bodies are changing. In addition, some women who have family history of depression may also be subjected to this mental state. Women whose husbands are not supportive may also be subjected to depression. Women may also get depressed when they experience complications during their pregnancy.

Depressed pregnant women often show different symptoms. These symptoms include fatigue, sadness, anxiety, irritability, guilt, hopelessness and lack of interest. Pregnant women who are depressed may also show signs such as lack of concentration and sleeping and eating disorders. Many of them also have unhealthy thoughts like suicide and death.

If these symptoms arise, it is important for a woman to find the proper support group. Being able to talk to someone about your problems can help with depression.
